Charlotte RFC @ Atlanta Renegades - Game Recap
Saturday Nov. 5th 2011 4pm Kick Off
A young and inexperienced Charlotte team traveled to Atlanta for an originally arranged friendly fixture that turned into an unexpected Fall Division 1 league game.
With limited match preparation due to scheduling difficulties, and some injuries and unavailability, the Charlotte team was always going to find it difficult against a more experienced and physical Renegades side, containing a number of former Life RSL players.
Renegades took the lead early though a penalty then converted try to lead 0-10 after 10 minutes. However Charlotte fought back, and settled into the game with a penalty by Dutch Jones who is proving to be an effective, if unorthodox kicker. The midfield of Felts, Elkins and Keefe produced multiple line breaks, and only a lack of execution with the final pass prevented the away side taking the lead.
Charlotte put together some solid phase play for the remainder of the half, with some inexperience when in the scoring zones proving costly, as Renegades broke clear to score to go in 3-17 at half time.
Almost immediately on the restart Charlotte scored a great try with Dutch Jones taking a quick tap and running, through, round and over several Renegades players on his way to the try line. He then confidently stepped up to hit the conversion to bring the score to 10-17.
A failure to execute the basic plan from the resulting restart allowed Renegades to immediately hit back with a try of their own (10-22). The Charlotte team never gave up, and continued to press the home side, resulting in a try scored by Ty Elkins, following a tackle turnover then slick handling from the forwards including Jimmy Dever and Jason Hinchman.
This brought the score to 15-22 going into the last quarter of the game, but in those last 20 minutes Renegades experience told, scoring 3 tries out wide to close out the game 15-37.
Overall, although disappointed with the result, the Charlotte team played some of their best rugby of the season, being aggressive at the tackle, disciplined around the breakdown and showing the ability to create line breaks against a tough and street wise opponent. Some of the young Charlotte players showed they could make the step up and with some dedicated training and practice over the coming months will look to turn this solid performance into 'wins' when the Division 1 season starts for real in Spring.
